La BaseLa Base

Built in 1911 Casa Cabanela, now known as La Base, occupies a defining position on Praza de San Andrés in the Pescadería neighbourhood of A Coruña.

For more than a century, its distinctive modernist architecture has formed part of the character of the square and the life of the city. Today, after a long period of being empty, La Base is entering a new chapter.

Brodee founder Daniel has developed a deep connection with A Coruña and La Base represents an opportunity to contribute to the city at a moment of revival, respecting what has come before while creating something made to last.

Working with a local team of architects, craftspeople and specialists, the building will be carefully restored and renewed for a long, adaptable future. The ambition is simple: to reconnect the building with the people and place around it.

Restoring an icon

La Base is more than a piece of architecture. It is part of the collective memory of A Coruña.

Generations have passed through its doors, met around it, celebrated beside it and used its name to describe the square itself. Its story belongs not only to the building, but to the people who have made this place what it is.

Built at a time when architecture celebrated craftsmanship, expression, ornament and civic identity, the ambition and individuality of La Base’s original architect, Julio Galán Carvajal, feel particularly relevant today.

Rather than preserve La Base as a relic, we believe its greatest value lies in allowing that character to continue.

Invested in A Coruña’s Future, Anchored in its Heritage

Our approach begins with what already exists.

The project will retain and celebrate the qualities that give La Base its identity, while carefully introducing the infrastructure, performance and flexibility needed for its next chapter.

High-quality, durable materials and considered interventions will allow the building to adapt to different needs over time, avoiding the cycle of short-lived refurbishment and replacement.

This is a different kind of sustainability: one rooted in longevity through flexibility.

The power of the praza

La Base has played a significant role in the life of the city and has been central to the praza it sits on. It should be part of its future too.

After 15 years of being empty, the building’s absence has weakened the relationship between the praza and the people around it. We want the project to help restore that connection, bringing new life to the building, the square and the wider community.

Working alongside the local community, the Municipality and Deloga, we are exploring opportunities to contribute to the wider renewal of the praza as well as the building itself.

For Brodee, this is what development should mean: not extracting value from a place, but helping to restore and create value within it and beyond it.

The ambition is to find one commercial partner who shares this approach and the values behind it, occupying the building as a whole and becoming part of the next chapter of a city steeped in history, tradition, nature, innovation and authenticity.
